Sustainable Land Use in Groundwater Areas

"The Drastrup Project"

Description

The objective of the project is to demonstrate how groundwater resources can be protected and thus to prevent groundwater pollution. The method is to test possible solutions to securing the groundwater. This is done by purchasing land from farmers with the aim of planting environmentally friendly forests.

The activities have been:

  • Reclamation of two ground water areas
  • Preparation of a land use plan for sustainable land use in these areas
  • Conversion of conventional agriculture land into forest, common of environmentally friendly agriculture

The project has been the first of its kind in Denmark with regard to carrying out interactive planning in relation to preventing groundwater pollution. One of the major achievements has been to boost the involvement of the citizens and to implement public projects together with the citizens and not just on behalf of them without integrating them in the planning and projecting. The project was implemented in the period 1997-2001.
