Development of Kaliningrad ZooDescription In the period 1998-2000 this project worked with the objective of introducing modern management principles and the issue of planning the Kaliningrad Zoo in order to ensure a sustainable development in the future. A development concept for the Zoo was elaborated through realising specific priority measures in the fields of animal keeping, education and information. This was obtained by strengthening the responsible authorities. The method used was training and workshop activities – lead by experts from Bremerhaven and Aalborg, the two EU partners. Results of the project were an exchange of experience and for the Kaliningrad Zoo an introduction to and membership of the EAZA (the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria). Furthermore, an assessment of the animal collection as well as an elaboration of the collection plan was carried out. Another result of the project was the elaboration of the General Plan of Development, of a financial concept for the Kaliningrad Zoo and the construction of a new brochure for the zoo, public awareness and the establishment of contacts to the international zoo community.
